An overview of Diary Entries
Woolf Online contains transcriptions of forty-one entries from Virginia Woolf's diaries written between 17 October 1924 and 25 November 1929, all making some reference to To the Lighthouse in various stages, from conception to drafting to revising to reading proofs and reviews. The seven entries between 30 April and 25 May, 1926, during which time Woolf composed "Time Passes," are also on the pilot site. We have included every entry in which Woolf makes reference to the novel, however passing it may be. The first entry records the initial conception of the novel as she was finishing Mrs. Dalloway:"I see already The Old Man." The last mentions that she is, or ought to be, correcting To the Lighthouse (for the Uniform edition of 1930). All entries come from volume three of the five-volume The Diary of Virginia Woolf, edited by Anne Olivier Bell (Harcourt 1977-1984). Transcriptions by Pamela Caughie and Elizabeth Hanson. Mounted and organised by Nick Hayward.
