THE WINDOWstuck like lumps of jelly to the side of the rock.Brooding, she changed the pool into the sea, andmade the minnows into sharks and whales, and castvast clouds over this tiny world by holding herhand against the sun, and so brought darkness anddesolation, like God himself, to millions of ignorantand innocent creatures, and then took her handaway suddenly and let the sun stream down. Out onthe pale criss-crossed sand, high-stepping, fringed,gauntletted, stalked some fantastic leviathan (shewas still enlarging the pool), and slipped intothe vast fissures of the mountain side. And then,letting her eyes slide imperceptibly above the pooland rest on that wavering line of sea and sky, onthe tree trunks which the smoke of steamers madewaver upon the horizon, she became with all thatpower sweeping savagely in and inevitably with-drawing, hypnotised, and the two senses of thatvastness and this tininess (the pool had diminishedagain) flowering within it made her feel that shewas bound hand and foot and unable to move bythe intensity of feelings which reduced her ownbody, her own life, and the lives of all the peoplein the world, for ever, to nothingness. So listen-ing to the waves, crouched over the pool, shebrooded.
