“Ambitious Analyst.” San Francisco Chronicle. May 22, 1927, p.10.
VIRGINIA WOOLF offers, in “To the Lighthouse,” an
ambitious analysis of domestic psychology. In “Mrs. Dalloway,”
she produced by an unusual fictional method a character
creation of unusual interest. “Mrs. Dalloway” was all Clarissa
Dalloway, and one remembers her clearly from the skillfully
combined presentation of what she thought and what she did.
The method is not as successful with the various characters in
“To the Lighthouse.” They are put on a high horse, but it bolts
in all directions. This is an interesting phenomenon, nevertheless.
